Vacationing

October 11, 2016 by Clark Wendlandt

33For the first time in a long time, Patti and I recently had the opportunity to go on a vacation.  Many of our friends take tropical vacations and tell us we should go, but we never could make the time.  We still don’t have the time, but we just decided we were going to make it work this year.  So in September we took a vacation to the Bahamas, and it lived up to all the hype.  It was a truly great experience – with just the right mix of relaxation and adventure.  I always want a vacation to have some kind of activity.  I can’t just sit on a beach.  And we ended up getting plenty of activity (with enough relaxing for Patti).  We were able to Kayak, snorkel and fish right outside our back door. I caught a lot of grouper and a few snapper.  We also had a chance to explore and observe the local culture, eat fresh conch salad (from conch we caught) and spear spiny lobster in the Atlantic. In fact, between the lobster and the fish we caught (and some we bought from fishermen on the docks), we ate fresh seafood all but one night.  Anywhere I’ve ever been, I always like to try to eat what we catch or kill.  But this was an all time high.  And the lobster spearing was as fun an activity as I have ever done.  We went out with Fishbone Tours on Eleuthera Island.  Our guide, Julius, found the lobster and taught me how to maneuver the snorkel gear and use the Hawaiin sling.  And before I came up on that first reef in the Atlantic, I had speared my first lobster. For someone who likes to hunt and fish, this was the ultimate thrill, and the lobster were gigantic.  The tail weighed between one and a half and two pounds.  The highlight of the trip though was getting to spend the week with my beautiful wife away from it all.  Now that’s a vacation!

Popular Lure Designer, Accomplished Tournament Angler Phil Marks Passes Away

It was really hard to hear the news of the passing of one of my oldest friends, Phil Marks. When I was at Texas A&M, Phil was my first tournament team partner for local and regional tournaments. Phil was one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. He understood fishing and engineering, which I know paved the way for his success as a bait developer. We basically learned how to fish together, and I have always thought he was one of the greatest I have ever fished with. I believe his legacy will live on for years to come. He will be greatly missed by us all. ... See more

Still can’t believe it sometimes. 2020 AOY. I want to thank everyone again for the support. I’ve been asked what my go-to baits were this year... and the baits I probably used the most and the ones I feel most confident in when I had to grind it out this year were a Strike King KVD 1.5 or 2.5 square bill Crankbait and the Strike King Rage Bug. Looking forward to carrying this momentum into next year!

Spending a few days up on Ray Roberts. My assessment so far... not catching a whole lot of fish, but when you do catch one it’s almost always a nice one! #teamoutdoors

It was a good year

We all have our goals when the year starts, but one of them is common to all of us. We want to fish the next Classic.

2020 Bassmaster Angler of the Year

2020 Bassmaster Angler of the Year It is hard to put in to words how it feels to have the greatest accomplishment of my career occur in the context of the most chaotic year of my life, and I imagine many of yours too – 2020. But in the midst of all the chaos, my job, while disrupted for a few months, resumed after a few months thanks to the efforts made by B.A.S.S to provide a full season for us. I am so appreciative to them and my fellow anglers for pulling together to make this happen. And … Read More...
